OUR TINY HUMANS TURN INTO TINY ACTIVISTS

When the Koret’s Children Playground was vandalized and damaged by a fire in July 2017, it devastated our children. The pre-kinders take a trip to the playground every Thursday for their picnics. The teachers led a discussion of what happened and helped the children process their feelings. The children were so upset and wanted to catch the “bad guys”who did this. We took this opportunity to turn their grief and anger into positive action. We shifted their focus to what we can do as a community to help the playground. And of course, they wanted to raise funds through a donut stand. So we picked up donuts and lemonade and made a stand near our preschool. We raised $283 in 40 minutes and took the Muni down to City Hall to give the money to the City. It just so happened that the late Mayor Ed Lee decided he was going to be there to receive our funds.

On March 31, 2018, our preschool was recognized by Mayor Mark Farrell, Phil Ginsburg (head of the SF Recreation and Parks), and London Breed (the President of the Board of District Supervisors) in March 2018 for our community activism. London Breed gives SSP a certificate of honor “The Board of Supervisors of the City and Council of San Francisco hereby issues, and authorizes the execution of, this Certificate of Honor in appreciative public recognition of distinction and merit for outstanding service to a significant portion of the people of the City and County of San Francisco by: Stepping Stones Preschool.” California Academy of Sciences Exhibit Stepping Stones Preschoolers get an exhibit! On April 21, 2016 the California Academy of Sciences invited our pre-kinders to display their Golden Gate Bridge model in their museum. The model took months of learning how to measure, pattern, and the science behind how a suspension bridge works. After months of hard work, the children put together their bridge using wood pieces, play chains for the cables (patterning), and a cardboard road. The children even made clay models of the living things that live under the bridge and in the ocean.

SSP Participates in the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the LetsPlaySF! Initiative with Mayor London Breed

San Francisco with the support of Mayor London Breed have made a plan to renovate the playgrounds in our city through the LetsPlaySF! Initiative. On April 25, 2019 the SF Recreation and Parks Department invited our preschoolers to the Groundbreaking Ceremony to symbolically dig towards our goal of better play spaces for our community. We got to be a part of the ceremony with both the Mayor and our Site Supervisor Vallie Brown!
